A couple has been arrested in Awutu Bontrase, Awutu Senya West District, following allegations that they beheaded their three-day-old baby boy and dumped the body at a refuse site.
Reports gathered by GHOne News indicate that the newborn was found with his head and left hand severed. Community members discovered the body at the dump and alerted authorities.
Investigations revealed that 24-year-old Abena Benewa had delivered the baby at home.
According to locals, the traditional birth attendant informed her that the baby had died, and arrangements were being made for burial when the father, 26-year-old Bright Ashiao, reportedly went to take custody of the body.
Eyewitnesses say the father attempted to bury the baby at the same site where the body was eventually found. Both parents were arrested by police in Bontrase and later transferred to the Awutu Bereku Police Station.
Some community members allege that the couple may have intended to use the child for money rituals, though police have not confirmed these claims.
Prince Larbie, the Assembly Member for Bontrase Electoral Area, confirmed the tragic incident and expressed concern over youth in the community increasingly engaging in criminal activities, including ritualistic practices.
Awutu Bereku District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Edmond Nyamekye, stated that the suspects remain in police custody and are expected to appear in court shortly.
The case has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting ongoing concerns about ritualistic crimes and child safety in the region.
