The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, says government will deploy at least 350 “health posts” to support the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare Initiative.
He made the announcement during an inspection tour of an under-construction health facility in Accra, as preparations intensify for the nationwide implementation of the programme.
According to him, the new “health posts” will be sited in high-traffic areas to improve access to basic healthcare services.
“This is another concept and we call it the ‘health post’. We are deploying not less than 350 posts. We will situate them in highly populated areas like markets and lorry parks for health workers to operate from those points,” he said.
Mr. Akandoh explained that each post will be fully equipped with basic infrastructure to support service delivery.
He listed facilities such as water supply, solar power, toilets, consulting rooms, a pharmacy, waiting areas, and detention spaces.
He added that implementation will begin in phases, starting with 150 districts in 2026 as part of a broader national rollout plan.
“The first phase we are looking at 350 structures. From 2026 to 2028, we aim to roll this out across the entire country,” he noted.
He further indicated that lessons from the initial phase will guide expansion and adjustments in subsequent years.
“If we are able to roll it out earlier, so be it. If not, by the end of 2028, we should be able to cover the whole country,” he added.
The initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery with emphasis on prevention, early detection, and improved access at the community level.
