The Deputy Minority Chief Whip and MP for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, has labelled the recent arrests of opposition politicians as a “massive diversion” designed to shield the government from accountability over failing economic and environmental policies.
Speaking on Starr FM’s Morning Starr on Thursday, April 23, 2026, Shaibu claimed that these arrests are state-sponsored intended to intimidate people who are very vocal critics of the government.
This tactic, he said, won’t work because the NPP will continue to expose the failures of the government, especially the betrayal of the agricultural sector, specifically cocoa farmers.
He alleged that the administration failed to meet its promised price hike for cocoa, leading to significant financial distress for rural communities.
He could not fathom why a government that had proposed an increase in cocoa prices from GHC 3,100 to GHC 6,000 Ghana will only increase to GHC 3,600 and later slash the prices down to 2,500 cedis—a drop of over 1,000 cedis from the peak and far below the original 6,000 cedi pledge.
These and many failures of the government, he said, ought to be exposed for Ghanaians to “know the true character of the government.”
He therefore warned that the NPP and its communicators will continue to do this diligently, insisting that no amount of intimidation can deter them.
