TGMA 2026 AOTY battle: Wendy Shay is the Yaa Asantewaa of Ghana music today – MC Portfolio

Entertainment pundit says Wendy Shay represents resilience, impact, and female excellence in Ghana’s music industry.

Entertainment pundit, David Adjei Frimpong, popularly known as MC Portfolio, has made a bold and thought-provoking case for Wendy Shay as Artiste of the Year, describing her as a modern-day Yaa Asantewaa within Ghana’s music industry.

Speaking on Starr Showbiz with host Feeling Daddy, MC Portfolio acknowledged the impressive run of Black Sherif, noting that his achievements this year position him as a formidable contender. However, he argued that Wendy Shay’s journey and influence; particularly as an independent female artiste; set her apart.

“It wouldn’t come as a shock if Black Sherif wins because he’s had an amazing year. But when you look at Wendy Shay’s journey as an independent artiste and a woman in this space, it’s something we cannot ignore,” he stated.

MC Portfolio emphasized that Wendy Shay’s rise challenges persistent concerns about gender inequality in the music industry.

“If Wendy Shay emerges as Artiste of the Year, it sends a strong signal that gender cannot be used as an excuse. She has proven that, despite the setbacks women face, it is possible to rise to the very top.”

He further questioned the heavy reliance on streaming numbers in defining “monster hits,” arguing that genuine success must extend beyond digital metrics.

“A song amassing streams doesn’t automatically make it a monster hit. A real hit must reflect in the streets, at events, and in everyday life; not just on digital platforms.”

Drawing from his personal experience hosting more than 60 weddings over the past year, Portfolio cited Wendy Shay’s Too Late as evidence of her cultural relevance.

“Couples consistently request ‘Too Late’ for their entrances. That tells you the song has real-life impact beyond just numbers.”

Beyond her domestic success, Portfolio highlighted Wendy Shay’s international recognition, including her West African Artiste of the Year honour at AFRIMA, as a major achievement for Ghana’s global music standing.

“Ghana would have missed out on major global honours in 2025 if not for Wendy Shay. That alone is a big deal.”

He also credited the artiste for revitalizing Ghana’s dance culture and supporting emerging talents, asserting that her influence transcends music and contributes to shaping the next generation of performers.

However, it was his historical comparison that has generated the strongest reactions.

“If you never witnessed Yaa Asantewaa in history, she’s right here in our time; and she has come back in the form of Wendy Shay.”
