Interior Ministry’s suspension of Kantanka Security Services licence ‘refreshing step’ – Toobu

Toobu hails swift licence suspension as “refreshing step” after Adwoa Safo shooting

The Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has welcomed the Interior Ministry’s immediate suspension of the operating licence of Kantanka Security Services Limited as a “refreshing step.”

The suspension follows a shooting incident on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at a family property in Kwabenya, Accra, during a succession-related dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission.

Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP), Sarah Adwoa Safo, was injured by a gunshot to her left ear.

Speaking to Starr News, Toobu, who is also the MP for Wa West, revealed that he and other legislators visited the injured former MP in hospital alongside the Deputy Minister for Health, Dr. Grace Ayensu.

“I visited her with the Deputy Minister for Health, Dr Grace Ayensu. In fact, when we saw her, we were wondering how can a family feud degenerate to the point that weapons are used to that extent,” Toobu said. “And you could see clearly that the intention was to kill. She is lucky to have survived and I wish her speedy recovery.”

Toobu commended the Ghana Police Service for treating the matter seriously and praised the Interior Ministry’s prompt response.

“This is a matter the Ghana Police Service is taking it to the highest level, they will investigate this matter and I am quite happy with the reaction from the Ministry of Interior that they suspended immediately or with immediate effect the license of Kantanka Security Services,” he added.

The Interior Ministry acted after preliminary investigations revealed alleged breaches of the Police Service (Private Security Organisations) Regulations, 1992 (L.I. 1571).

These include the use of unprescribed uniforms and the possession and deployment of firearms by the company’s personnel during the private security operation.

Press Secretary at the Interior Ministry, Julius Kwame Anthony, earlier explained the regulatory basis for the action.

“The state’s own security institutions work in compliance with various regulations… And when it comes to private security organizations, they are regulated by LI 1571,” Anthony stated.

He referenced Regulation 12, which prescribes approved uniforms for private security operatives to ensure easy identification and uniformity.

“From the preliminary observations… and the videos that are available even to the public, you would see that the people who were purportedly providing security services…were uniforms which were not in conformity with those that are prescribed by regulation 12 of LI 1571,” he noted.

The ministry has ordered Kantanka Security Services Limited to cease all operations pending the completion of full investigations.
