The Ministry of Interior has suspended all firearm licenses previously issued to private individuals as part of a sweeping initiative to reduce the proliferation of arms across the country.
The directive, announced by the Ministry of the Interior, forms part of broader measures to strengthen gun control regulations and enhance public safety.
According to the Minister of Interior, Muhammad Muntaka, the suspension is intended to allow for a comprehensive review and tightening of licensing procedures.
“Government initiated the gun amnesty program with a clear and urgent objective to confront the threat posed by unregistered and illicit firearms to the lives, livelihood and national development,” Minister Mubarak said.
“At the same time, we recognize that sustainable security requires more than enforcement. It demands trust, dialogue, and provision of a lawful pathway for citizens to regularize their conduct without fear.”
The Minister further expressed satisfaction with the public response to the amnesty initiative.
“I am pleased to report that this approach yielded meaningful results. A total of 4,038 unregistered firearms were surrendered to the Ghana Police,” he stated.
“This outcome reflects the patriotism, responsibility, and civic commitment of Ghanaians who chose compliance over lawlessness.”
The government has described the combination of the amnesty program and the license suspension as a dual-track strategy aimed at encouraging voluntary surrender of illicit weapons while instituting stricter controls on legally held firearms.
