Michael Donyina Mensah, Executive Director of Centre for Public Opinion and Awareness (CenPOA), has called on Ghanaians to allow state institutions to carry out their constitutional and legal responsibilities without applying different standards based on political affiliation.

Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Mr Mensah said the country must decide whether it genuinely wants its laws and institutions to work effectively, particularly in the fight against crime and corruption.

According to him, public support for state institutions should not depend on whether a person is politically connected or belongs to a particular party.

“We must decide as a country whether we really want our laws to work, whether we really want to fight crime and corruption,” he said.

Mr Mensah questioned why some people demand accountability and effective state institutions when individuals they do not know are involved but raise concerns when the same institutions act against a politician or someone they support.

“Or we only say those things when people who are not connected to us are involved,” he said.

He said such selective reactions undermine efforts to ensure that state institutions perform their duties effectively.

“So that if it’s your MP, then all of a sudden, we are pointing our accusing fingers at state institutions,” he added.

Mr Mensah stressed the need for consistency in the application of the law, saying people must be willing to support accountability regardless of who is affected.

“But when it is somebody you don’t know, then all of us, all of a sudden, have the energy to say that, yes, state institutions must work,” he said.

He therefore urged Ghanaians to allow state institutions to perform their duties while ensuring that individuals are held accountable where necessary.

“We must do the right thing. People must be held accountable and all of that,” he added.
