Carlos Queiroz has left his position as head coach of the Ghana Black Stars following a mutual agreement with the Ghana Football Association, two days after the team’s embarrassing 4-2 defeat to Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The Ghana Football Association’s Director of Communications, Henry Asante Twum, announced the Portuguese coach’s departure on Thursday, October 1, bringing an end to his latest spell in charge of the national team.
The 73-year-old was reappointed by the GFA after his contract expired at the end of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Queiroz managed seven matches during his latest stint, recording one win, two draws and four defeats. His only victory came against Panama, while he drew with Wales in a friendly and England at the World Cup.
His remaining four matches ended in defeats, with the latest coming against Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars appeared to be in control after taking a two-goal lead in the first half, but Gambia staged a remarkable comeback to win 4-2 and leave Ghana with another setback in their AFCON qualifying campaign.
The defeat also intensified questions over Queiroz’s future, particularly after Ghana’s failure to secure a win in eight consecutive AFCON qualifying matches.
With Queiroz now out of the picture, the Ghana Football Association will have to begin the search for a new head coach as the Black Stars prepare for their next AFCON qualifying assignments during the November international break.
The GFA is expected to announce further details on the appointment of Queiroz’s replacement in the coming weeks.
