The former deputy Majority leader, Afred Kwame Agbesi says the deputy Majority leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin must shun arrogance if he should lead the majority side in Parliament.
This follows the resignation by the Majority leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and per reports the Effutu Member of Parliament (MP) Alexander Afenyo-Markin will take over as leader of the majority bench.
The move by the Suame MP follows a meeting with President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House over a seeming impasse with the executive over an attempt to make changes to the front bench of the party in Parliament.
Earlier the majority caucus led by first deputy speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu had vehemently kicked against the decision to remove Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as majority leader.
But speaking on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the former lawmaker stated that Mr. Afenyo-Markin must cultivate consensus building if he wants to succeed as the new leader in the House.
“I have a small problem with Afenyo-Markin. If he continues in the next Parliament like that as leader then there will be a problem. Because his demeanor on the floor of the House is always arrogant. Afenyo-Markin I don’t see him building consensus, when he pushes a point he thinks that you must pursue it to the end. Trying to emulate Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu is not good for political development,” Mr. Agbesi stated.
According to him, there will be challenges in the House if Mr. Afenyo-Markin does not change with his leadership.
“At a certain point I think that he should come down. Listen to his people and the other side and build consensus. If he doesn’t do that and goes to the next Parliament as leader that is the only problem, and there will be disputes in the House.
“If you are a leader for Majority or Minority you need the other side to be able to progress. But if you are a leader and you look down on the other side then there will not be way for future development,” the former deputy leader stated.
