The Eastern South Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Chief Sofo Azorka in connection with an alleged assault on Alhaji Masawudu Osman during the Akwatia by-election on September 2, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Affairs Unit in Kibi on Friday, September 12, police said Chief Azorka was arrested in Tamale on September 10 as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.
A caution statement has since been obtained from the suspect, who was granted bail.
He is expected to report to the Eastern South Regional Police Command in Kyebi on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 10 a.m., where he will be arraigned before court.
The incident reportedly occurred at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area during the by-election.
Alhaji Masawudu Osman, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) third national vice-chairman, alleged that the confrontation was instigated by the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) national vice-chairman, Chief Azorka.
Recounting the events, Alhaji Masawudu said it unfolded while he was granting a media interview near Akwatia Zongo, where he had been assigned to supervise the polls.
“I have been assigned to supervise and monitor the election at Akwatia Zongo. In fact, I was granting an interview when a national vice chairman of the NDC, Azorka because of ignorance comes straight to where I was granting an interview to attack me,” he said.
He further alleged that the confrontation happened in full view of police officers, adding that Chief Azorka threatened to have him and the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, caned that day.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command assured the public that thorough investigations are underway and urged all to remain calm as the case proceeds.
The statement was signed by DSP David Fianko Oryere, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Eastern South Region.
