Atta Mills never used state agencies for his political bidding – Mahama

Former President John Mahama has said that his former boss, the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills was a modest politician.

He described the late President as a man of integrity, an attribute he said many will vouch for him.

Speaking at the 11th anniversary of the passing of Prof Mills in Kumasi Thursday 27th July 2023, former President Mahama said he never created power at all costs and manipulated state agencies to do his political bidding.

The tenth anniversary commemorative lecture of Professor John Evans Atta Mills was held in Kumasi and graced by Nana Mensah Bonsu representative of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Ashanti regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah.

Others are Ambassador Daniel Ohene Agyekum, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang and Vice chancellor of KNUST and PanAfricanist and governance advocate, Prof PLO Lumumba.

The event was used to share the memories of the late President and the mark he made in Ghanaian politics that earned him the accolade of the “King of Peace’’ (Asomdweehene).

Speaking at the lecture, the flag bearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) took a swipe at the President Akufo-Addo Administration.

He pointed out that the posturing of politicians in government is a departure from the ideals of humility and integrity demonstrated by the late John Evans Attah Mills.

Mr. Mahama said that the attributes of Professor Mills are in short supply in the present ruling government.

PanAfricanist and governance advocate, Prof PLO Lumumba who was guest speaker also described Africa as a continent lacking exemplary leaders when he chronicled endemic corruption, abuse of office and arrogance among leaders on the continent.

His assertion comes at a time the country has been rocked with the scandal of a million dollars and huge sums in other foreign and local currencies, allegedly stolen from the home of the resigned minister of Water and Sanitation, Cecelia Dapaah.

He reminded African leaders to be fixated on the impact they leave rather than on how long they hang on to power.

A book titled ‘Its All About Mills’ was launched at the event, in honor of the late former president Prof. John Evans Attah Mills.

Professor Atta Mills was the Vice President of Ghana from 1997 to 2001 and became the president in 2009 after the historic elections in 2008 elections. President Mills died July 2012 whiles in office

At the time of his death in 2012 he was the world’s only Fulbright scholar to have been elected head of state.
