Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has publicly condemned the actions of police officers involved in the shooting of some youth in Bawku earlier today.
In a statement released on April 9, 2025, Ayariga distanced himself from any involvement in the operations of law enforcement officers in the area. He clarified that he had never instructed any police officer to permit or prevent individuals from accessing markets or purchasing goods, stating that such matters fall under the purview of law enforcement agencies and not elected representatives.
“I totally condemn the actions of the police in shooting some youth in Bawku today,” Ayariga stated. “I have never had any discussion with any police and directed them to allow anyone to attend any market or purchase anything from anyone. Such matters are not my responsibility.”
The MP emphasized that operational decisions by law enforcement should not be attributed to him, highlighting the separation between political office holders and police authority.
Ayariga also called on law enforcement officers to collaborate closely with traditional leadership in the area, particularly Zugran Abubragago Azoka II, the overlord of Kusaug, to help maintain peace and order.
