The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced plans to introduce the National Integrity and Vulture Awards as a strategic initiative to shape the conduct of public officers and promote accountability within the country.
Speaking in Parliament following his return from Morocco, where he chaired the proceedings as President of the Speakers and Presidents of Parliaments and Legislatures in Africa, Bagbin expressed his deep concern about the state of governance and public service in Ghana. He emphasized that the awards will serve as a tool to encourage ethical leadership and discourage corruption in public office.
“This award system will not only apply to Parliament but will be extended to the entire nation. A national committee comprising members from the clergy, civil society, political groups, and business entities will be established to assess and evaluate individuals based on their integrity and conduct,” Bagbin stated.
Highlighting the deteriorating state of governance, Bagbin lamented the decline of ethical standards in Parliament and public office. He recounted past experiences where financial incentives were secondary to the duty of service, contrasting them with the present culture where financial gains seem to take precedence over national interest.
Bagbin also reflected on his experience in Morocco, drawing attention to how transformational and generational decisions are shaping the North African nation. He challenged Ghanaian leaders to take bold steps in reshaping the country’s governance framework, emphasizing that Ghana’s strategic geographical location should serve as a key advantage in national development.
The introduction of the National Integrity and Vulture Awards marks a significant step towards instilling discipline and accountability in Ghana’s governance system. With this initiative, Speaker Bagbin hopes to restore public confidence in leadership and ensure that public officeholders adhere to the highest ethical standards in service to the nation.
