Bawumia will never be NPP flagbearer  – Mahama

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is running mate of the NPP

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) only uses people of Northern extraction to do the party’s difficult works and abandon them when it comes to filling leadership positions, President John Mahama has said.

According to the President,  the NPP does not see Northerners as fit to assume any top leadership role within their  party.

Speaking at Lawra on his campaign tour of the Upper West region, Mr.  Mahama cited what he says is the ill treatment meted out to the late vice President Aliu Mahama when had to contest 16 other candidates in his attempt to succeed former President John Kufuor in 2007.

He cautioned Northerners in the elephant family to be wary of the political choice they have made.

“Sometimes I feel sad when I see some of our Northern brothers running around and also doing this (the change sign), they will use you and dump you,” President Mahama warned.

He went on to categorically state that the vice Presidential candidate of the NPP Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be stopped in his tracks should he decide in future to lead the party as a flagbearer.

“I want to live to see the day; you let anything happen today and let our brother Bawumia say he is standing for president in NPP. They will never give it to him, I can assure you.” He told an excited crowd at Lawra.

The President went further down memory lane to refer to an alliance between the antecedent of the NPP, the UGCC and the Northern People’s Party (NPP) which gave rice to the United Party (UP).

According to the President,  the fact that leadership of the newly formed UP went to members of the UGCC rather than the Northern People’s Party which had a majority in parliament shows the disdain for the people of Northern extraction.

Mr. Mahama is on a 3-day campaign tour of the Upper West region ahead of the December Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
