Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) in a ceremony held in Accra to honour newly elevated senior officers of the Ghana Police Service.

Dr. Agordzo’s promotion was among the highlights of the ceremony, which saw the presentation of appointment letters and badges to 19 senior officers. The recognition comes post-retirement and is seen as a significant moment in a career marked by both service and controversy.

The brief ceremony, led by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, was graced by the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, who used the occasion to advocate for fairness in the promotion process and called for renewed morale across the service.

Dr. Agordzo’s elevation to DCOP comes after years of service and a turbulent legal battle over alleged involvement in a coup plot; a charge he firmly denied and was later acquitted of. His promotion is a symbolic restoration of honour and recognition of his contributions to national security and internal peace.

In his remarks, the Interior Minister acknowledged the need to address long-standing disparities in police promotions, noting that such inequities have led to disillusionment within the service. “We know how some people have been disadvantaged for a very long time, almost becoming disincentive and demoralising,” the Minister said, adding that the government has tasked the new IGP to review promotions from the rank of constables to Commissioners.

Dr. Agordzo was part of a group of eleven officers promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Police. Others include God-act Dodzi Hlordzi, Wisdom Akorli, Francis Christopher Abakah, Joshua Coppson, Wisdom Lavoe, Obed Dzikunu, William Kofi Donkor, Phyllis Ama Tebua Osei, Joseph Owusu Ansah, and Alex Wowolo.

Eight officers were also promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police (COP), including COP Abdul-Razak Osman, who spoke on behalf of the newly promoted group, pledging their commitment to serve with integrity and diligence.

The Interior Minister emphasised that the promotions should be seen not just as titles but as renewed calls to responsibility. He further assured government support in logistics, welfare, and operational tools to enable the police service to deliver effectively.

The ceremony marked a turning point in what the Minister described as efforts to restore fairness, boost morale, and instil discipline in the Ghana Police Service. Dr. Agordzo’s promotion, in particular, stood as a powerful gesture towards reconciliation and institutional justice.
