The Assemblies of God, Ghana has expressed strong support for President John Dramani Mahama following the decision by Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, USA, to withdraw an honorary doctorate previously set to be conferred on him.
According to the university, the withdrawal was in response to President Mahama’s stance on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill currently before Ghana’s Parliament.
The Assemblies of God, Ghana, however, described the decision as a “mark of honour” rather than a rebuke.
In a statement, the church compared the situation to the biblical account in Acts 5:41, where apostles “left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name of the Lord.”
The church said it views the global criticism of President Mahama as recognition of his steadfastness in upholding biblical principles.
President Mahama, a longstanding member of the Assemblies of God, has publicly maintained that homosexuality is “scripturally or biblically forbidden,” morally unacceptable, and culturally inappropriate.
The church praised him for his unwavering position, noting that it serves as an example for members to remain committed to spiritual and moral values, regardless of public or international opinion.
The Assemblies of God urged its members and the broader Christian community to pray earnestly for the nation, emphasizing the importance of resisting practices they view as morally harmful.
