Ghana’s Black Queens suffered a tough start to their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign, losing 2-0 to defending champions South Africa on Monday at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda.
Despite showing moments of promise, Ghana were undone by two quick goals in the first half, as Banyana Banyana’s experience and clinical edge made the difference.
The defeat places early pressure on the Queens in what is shaping up to be a challenging Group C.
Alice Kusi nearly gave Ghana the lead with a thunderous strike that rattled the crossbar, while Evelyn Badu also struck the woodwork with a close-range header. The Black Queens created chances but couldn’t find the breakthrough.
South Africa, meanwhile, punished Ghana’s defensive lapses with ruthless efficiency, sealing the win well before the hour mark.
The Queens now face crucial group games against Mali and Tanzania. While the race for a top-two finish has become more difficult, Ghana still has a chance of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams. A strong response will be vital in their upcoming fixtures.
