Ghana’s Black Stars face Africa Cup of Nations exit for the first time in 20 years after a 2-0 defeat to Sudan at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benghazi.
This defeat puts the Black Stars in a challenging position to secure their spot in the upcoming tournament in Morocco.
Ghana had the advantage in their first-leg match against Sudan but failed to convert chances. Sudan, determined and tactically disciplined, capitalized on two quick goals in the second half.
Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi made crucial saves to keep Ghana in the game.
Ghana’s best chance came from a cross, but a miscommunication between Ernest Nuamah and Inaki Williams resulted in a collision instead of a successful connection.
Ghana had hope in the second half when Inaki Williams’ goal was disallowed for offside. However, Sudan capitalized on a counterattack through Ahmed Al-Tash in the 62nd minute.
Mohamed Abdel Raman outpaced Mohammed Salisu and secured Sudan’s second goal with a low shot past Ati-Zigi three minutes later.
Ghana struggled to respond, with Kudus’s attempt missing and Williams’ volley going wide, leading to frustration.
As it stands, Angola leads the group table with 9 points, followed by Sudan with 7 points. Ghana is third with just 2 points, ahead of Niger, who have 1 point.
Ghana will now have to win their remaining two matches against Angola and Niger while relying on Sudan to drop points against the same opponents.
Ghana has suffered back-to-back group-stage exits in 2021 and 2023, and their potential failure to qualify for 2025 looms.
