Voting has commenced in earnest in the Bono East region, with crowds gathering at various polling centers to cast their ballots.
In the Techiman South constituency, hundreds of voters have already formed queues, eager to exercise their franchise in Ghana’s 9th general post-independent elections.
The voters are tasked with choosing the next president from among 12 candidates, as well as selecting the next Member of Parliament for the Techiman South Metropolis from four contenders.
The parliamentary contest is expected to be a fierce battle between Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah of the New Patriotic Party and Christopher Beyere Basongti of the National Democratic Congress.
The rivalry between Korsah and Basongti is particularly intense, given their history in the previous elections.
Korsah won by a narrow margin of just over 200 votes, a result that was contested by Basongti at the Wenchi High Court.
This time around, Basongti’s sympathizers are determined to secure a wider margin, while Korsah’s supporters argue that he has performed exceptionally well and deserves to be retained.
Other issues, such as unemployment, high cost of living, and tribalism, are also influencing voters’ decisions in the Techiman area.
As the day unfolds, it remains to be seen how these factors will impact the outcome of the elections.
