Abetifi Member of Parliament and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has formally announced his decision to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Dr. Acheampong made the declaration on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, during an engagement with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.
According to him, as a committed member of the church, it was only right to inform them personally before making his intentions public.
“I want to put myself out as a candidate to contest Flagbearer elections…A decision has been made that I will contest when the party opens nominations, but to do that, as a product of the church, it will be a disappointment per my tradition, if the moderator of the church hears it for the first time on the radio.
He emphasized that as a product of the church, it would be inappropriate for the leadership to hear about his political ambition through the media, hence his decision to formally inform them first and seek their prayers and support.

“So, before the formal announcement is made, I thought it wise to inform the general council and the moderator of the presby church. Most importantly, I am here to also seek the blessings of God.”
The NPP has scheduled its presidential primary for January 31, 2026, a contest expected to be fiercely competitive as the party looks to rebuild its political strength after its defeat in the 2024 elections.
Several influential party members have already declared their intentions to join the race, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey.
