The Ghana Police Service has issued a firm statement, declaring that the organizers of the upcoming Democracy Hub demonstration will be held accountable for any breaches of the law during the protest. This follows a meeting held earlier today between the Police and Democracy Hub representatives, where law enforcement raised concerns about public safety and court orders prohibiting the planned demonstration at specific locations.
During the meeting, Police informed the organizers of a court order restricting demonstrations near Revolution Square and Jubilee House due to concerns over public defense, order, safety, and essential services. The Democracy Hub organizers acknowledged receipt of this court order but suggested alternative routes for the protest, including 37 Roundabout, Airport Roundabout, Opeibea Intersection, Stanbic Heights, Christ the King, and Arko Adjei Interchange.
However, the Police deemed these proposed locations unsuitable due to the potential risk they posed to public order and safety. In response, law enforcement suggested seven alternative locations, including the Cantonments Post Office-DVLA stretch, El Wak side park, and Obra Spot. Despite these recommendations, the organizers refused to accept any of the proposed venues, leading to a stalemate.
The Police have appealed to the Democracy Hub and the public to reconsider these alternatives in the interest of public safety and urged members of the public to engage with the organizers.
In a related development, Police intelligence has raised alarms about possible illegal actions being planned by some demonstrators. These include defying court orders, carrying weapons, attacking MPs and state officials, assaulting police officers, and targeting critical national installations. There are also concerns about demonstrators wielding catapults, stones, and using motorbikes to create chaos on public roads.
The Police have issued a stern warning to the organizers, urging them to prevent their members from engaging in these unlawful activities. They stressed that any violations of the law during the demonstration would result in the organizers being held accountable.
