The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has lauded stakeholders for their collective role in ensuring a smooth and peaceful by-election in Akwatia on September 2, 2025.
The by-election ended with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, securing victory with 18,199 votes.
His closest contender, Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, garnered 15,235 votes, while Patrick Owusu of the Liberal Progressive Party (LPP) polled 82 votes.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 4, and signed by Regional Chairman Stephen Ampem Darko-Koranteng, the Association described the by-election as a “democratic exercise conducted with professionalism, maturity, and civic responsibility.”
The GJA singled out the Electoral Commission for its efficient management of the polls and commended the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies for prioritizing the safety of journalists and voters alike.
Political parties and their supporters, especially the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC), were acknowledged for showing restraint and political maturity.
“We commend the Electoral Commission for its professional organization and management of the electoral process. The Association also recognizes the role of the security agencies, particularly the Ghana Police Service, whose vigilance and dedication preserved law and order while ensuring the safety of our members before, during, and after the exercise.
We further acknowledge the political parties, their candidates, and supporters for demonstrating political maturity and a firm commitment to democratic principles.”
Civil society groups, election observers, and the media were also praised for contributing to transparency through factual and timely coverage.
The statement further applauded the people of Akwatia for turning out in large numbers to cast their ballots peacefully, reinforcing Ghana’s reputation as one of Africa’s leading democracies.
The Association reaffirmed its commitment to championing responsible journalism that protects peace and deepens democratic governance.
