The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that a by-election will be held in the Tamale Central Constituency on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, following the death of the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, the EC said the parliamentary seat had become vacant in line with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, and nominations would be received from prospective candidates between 8th and 10th September, 2025 at the Tamale Metropolitan Office of the Commission.
Nomination forms can be downloaded from the Commission’s website from August 19 to September 10, 2025. Forms must be submitted between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on the stated days.
Each nomination form must be signed by two registered voters as proposer and seconder, and supported by 18 other registered voters in the constituency. Candidates must also provide two recent passport-sized photographs against a red background, showing their full face and ears.
The filing fee for the election has been set at GHC10,000.00 per candidate, while female candidates and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will pay a reduced fee of GHC7,500.00. Completed forms are to be submitted in quadruplicate.
The EC urged the public and interested candidates to take note of the arrangements.
Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim, who also served as the Environment Minister, was one of the eight victims of the fatal Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter crash that occurred in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region during a flight from Accra to Obuasi. The other victims were Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
