Renowned security consultant, Prof. Kwesi Aning, has strongly criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their disrespect and abuse towards Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Prof. Aning’s comments come after the NPP, particularly former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, questioned Opoku-Agyemang’s suitability for candidacy based on her age ¹.
Prof. Aning described the NPP’s behavior as “disgraceful” and “abusive,” stating that it reflects poorly on Ghana’s political culture and the way some men think.
He praised John Mahama for retaining Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate, despite facing pressure to make a change.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s nomination and subsequent victory mark a significant milestone in Ghana’s political landscape, as she becomes the first female Vice President-elect.
Her rise reflects a growing recognition of the importance of female representation in governance.
Throughout her career, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has demonstrated her commitment to education and empowerment.
As Minister for Education from 2013 to 2017, she spearheaded key reforms, including the cancellation of the teacher trainee allowance and the introduction of a book and research allowance for university lecturers.
Despite facing criticism and abuse, Opoku-Agyemang has remained a strong and capable leader, bringing a wealth of experience to the political arena.
Her victory is an inspiration to women and girls across Ghana and a significant step towards achieving greater gender equality in the country’s political landscape.
