The Ghana Water Company Limited has threatened to cut water supply to Senior High Schools in the Eastern region over unpaid bills.
Almost all the Public Second Cycle Institutions in the Eastern region owe the water company huge sums of money, crippling the operations of the company.
The Company has begun dispatching letters to the indebted institutions to pay their debts or risk being disconnected.
One of the letters addressed to the Koforidua Secondary Technical School and cited by Starr News’ Eastern regional Correspondent , Kojo Ansah, indicates that the school is indebted to the tune of GCH 76,000, and the water company is demanding an immediate payment in order to avoid a disconnection.
Payment of utility bills in public schools is a responsibility of government, however in 2016, government decided to allow tertiary institutions in particular, to levy students to pay utility bills. The policy was however ditched after several agitations by student unions.
The Public Relations Officer of the GWCL Kojo Daase confirmed to Starr News that “most second cycle institutions are owing the company a lot” affecting the revenue purse of the company .
