Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been officially sworn into office as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
Her swearing-in, however, was marked by a dramatic walkout staged by the Minority in Parliament.
The protest was led by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who sought to make a statement before the oath was administered.
When the Speaker ruled that any concerns could be addressed after the ceremony, the Minority staged a walkout in objection.
Despite the protest, the induction proceeded as planned.

Aubynn’s entry into Parliament follows a highly contested rerun election on July 11, in which she narrowly defeated the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, by just 209 votes. She secured 34,090 votes to Afriyie’s 33,881 across all 281 polling stations.

Her victory represents a historic breakthrough for the NDC, which had never won the Ablekuma North seat since the constituency’s creation.
The rerun was necessitated by unresolved collation and verification issues during the original December 2024 general elections.

Although the NPP initially threatened to boycott the rerun, Nana Akua Afriyie chose to contest, citing a duty to defend her mandate after the Accra High Court dismissed her injunction application.
