Parliament witnessed a dramatic moment on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, when the Minority staged a walkout just moments before the swearing-in of Ewurabena Aubynn, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North.
The protest was sparked by an attempt from Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, to make a statement prior to the oath-taking ceremony.
After securing the attention of the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, Annoh-Dompreh sought to raise an issue for discussion before the formal induction.
However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga opposed the move, insisting that any concerns could be addressed after the swearing-in had taken place.
The Speaker agreed with the Majority Leader’s position, ruling that the Minority would be allowed to speak only after the ceremony.
Unhappy with the decision, Annoh-Dompreh declared, “Mr. Speaker, I’m very sorry and I say this with difficult that if that is the turn of event, then in the minority for the records cannot be part of the swearining in and as a result we are walking out.”
Despite the Minority’s exit, proceedings continued uninterrupted. Ewurabena Aubynn, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), was officially sworn in by the Speaker as the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North.
Her induction follows a historic victory in the July 11 parliamentary rerun, which saw the NDC capture the constituency seat for the first time.
