The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) says the use of excavators for illegal mining has drastically declined due to sustained enforcement efforts, but the fight against galamsey remains far from over.
Speaking at the NAIMOS Editors’ Forum and Quarterly Press Briefing on March 25, the Director of Operations, Dominic Buah, revealed that over 94 excavators have been seized since operations intensified, significantly curbing the mechanized methods often used by illegal miners.
“The use of excavators for Galamsey has drastically reduced as a result of the ongoing fight,” Col. Buah said, noting that this reflects the impact of coordinated operations across mining hotspots.
Despite the progress, Col. Buah cautioned against complacency, stressing that illegal mining remains a threat and that continued vigilance is essential. He also highlighted operational challenges, including limited logistics and funding, which could slow the momentum of the crackdown.
The NAIMOS Director reiterated appeals for support from corporate and non-governmental organizations to strengthen the Secretariat’s capacity, emphasizing that additional resources would help sustain pressure on illegal miners.
Col. Buah further warned that resistance from some mining communities persists, underscoring that task force operatives are trained and prepared to defend themselves when confronted.
He stressed that while the seizure of excavators marks a significant achievement, the fight against galamsey requires ongoing enforcement, improved resourcing, and national support to ensure long-term success.
