President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a GH₵50 million government package to supply outboard motors and modern fishing equipment to coastal and inland fishing communities as part of efforts to strengthen livelihoods and upgrade the sector.
Addressing the National Chief Fisherman and Queen Fishmonger’s Conference on World Fisheries Day, President Mahama said the allocation forms part of a broader plan to modernize fisheries, clean beaches, and create sustainable jobs.
“For the fifth month this year, 50 million cedis have been allocated for the procurement of outboard motors and fishing equipment,” he said, adding that a new beach-cleaning initiative will employ fisherfolk and pay them a monthly allowance.
He noted that fishers have been exempted from the closed season and urged strict adherence to all regulations in return.
The President also revealed that two offshore patrol vessels are being procured for the Ghana Navy to boost marine enforcement, while the 2026 budget includes funding for two new fish markets.
Mahama stressed that the reforms are designed to protect marine resources, curb illegal fishing, and ensure that fishing communities remain central to the industry’s long-term growth.
