Ghana has launched its National Energy Compact, setting an ambitious target to triple the country’s renewable energy share in the national mix from 4% to 10% by 2026 and reach 30% by 2035.
The Compact was unveiled by President John Dramani Mahama at the Bloomberg Philanthropies Global Forum in New York, as part of Mission 300, a bold initiative to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030.

Mission 300 is spearheaded by the World Bank Group (WBG) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) in collaboration with partners such as The Rockefeller Foundation and Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL). The WBG will connect 250 million people to electricity, and the AfDB another 50 million by 2030.
Together, the initiative seeks to expand electricity access, improve utility efficiency, attract private investment, and boost regional energy integration towards Africa’s economic transformation.

Under the new Energy Compact, Ghana commits to:
1. Increase the share of renewable energy in the national energy mix from 4% to 10% by 2026 and 30% by 2035;
2. Mobilize significant investment in the energy sector;
3. Promote clean cooking solutions; and
4. Advance the productive use of energy to support economic growth.
President Mahama emphasized that energy access is central to Ghana’s growth agenda:
“Ghana believes universal access to energy is essential for empowering businesses, reducing poverty, and ensuring equal opportunities for all. Achieving this vision requires strong partnerships between governments and the private sector.”
Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor added:
“This blueprint positions Ghana to attract $20 billion in investments for grid modernization, renewable projects, and energy efficiency in the next decade.”
Nearly 600 million Africans still lack access to electricity. Mission 300 is designed to close this gap. It will help power schools and hospitals, create jobs, and drive investment and trade across the continent.
By linking energy access with social and economic empowerment, the initiative aims to transform lives and build a sustainable energy future for Africa.
