The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed two cases of Mpox in the Accra Metropolitan Area of the Greater Accra Region and says swift containment measures are underway to prevent further spread of the virus.
In a press release issued today, May 15, 2025, the GHS indicated that it is working closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure all necessary public health protocols are effectively implemented. The Service assured the public that the situation is under control and there is no cause for widespread alarm.
Mpox is a viral disease transmitted through close contact with infected persons, animals, or contaminated materials. Symptoms include rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.

According to the GHS, contact tracing has begun to identify individuals who may have come into contact with the confirmed cases. These individuals will be monitored for symptoms and provided with appropriate care and guidance. Surveillance in health facilities and communities is also being intensified to detect and investigate any additional suspected cases promptly.
In addition to containment efforts, the health authorities are rolling out public awareness campaigns to educate the public on Mpox, its symptoms, transmission, and prevention. The public is being urged to practise good hand hygiene, avoid close contact with symptomatic individuals, and report any suspected symptoms to the nearest health facility.
The statement emphasized that Ghana’s public health system remains vigilant and has the capacity to manage the situation effectively, preventing a larger outbreak.
