The government has announced a reduction in the cost of an ordinary passport, lowering the fee from GHS 500 to GHS 350. The decision was revealed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, during a parliamentary session on March 13, 2025.
Addressing the House, Minister Ablakwa stated that the move aligns with the government’s commitment to making passports more accessible to Ghanaians while maintaining high security standards.
“The government recognises concerns about the affordability of the new passport and is committed to ensuring that the cost remains reasonable while maintaining high security standards,” he said.
He further disclosed that the decision was made following instructions from President John Dramani Mahama and that an amendment to the fees and charges will soon be presented for parliamentary approval.
“We will in the coming days be presenting an amendment to the fees and charges to ensure that this reduction is approved. That is the new policy position of the Mahama administration,” he added.
The reduction comes amid public concerns over the high cost of obtaining a passport in Ghana, with many citizens calling for a more affordable rate. The new pricing policy is expected to ease the financial burden on applicants and improve accessibility to travel documents.
