The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, has expressed confidence in the progress of government’s planned 1,200-megawatt thermal power project, describing it as a transformative initiative that will significantly strengthen Ghana’s electricity generation capacity.

The Minister made the remarks after engaging officials of Ghana Thermal Power Ltd. (GTPL), the special purpose vehicle established by government to drive the implementation of the ambitious thermal power programme.

According to Dr. Jinapor, he received a comprehensive briefing on ongoing preparatory and implementation activities, as well as milestones achieved toward the delivery of the project.

He noted that the progress made so far demonstrates that the initiative remains firmly on course and is poised to play a critical role in supporting Ghana’s growing energy needs.

“The progress achieved thus far is a strong indication that this landmark initiative is firmly on course and will play a transformative role in the development of Ghana’s energy sector and the broader economy,” he stated.

The 1,200MW thermal power project forms part of government’s broader strategy to expand generation capacity, improve energy security, and ensure a reliable supply of electricity to support industrial growth and economic development.

Dr. Jinapor reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the country’s power generation infrastructure, emphasizing that efforts are underway to build a resilient and future-ready energy sector capable of meeting rising demand.

He stressed that increasing generation capacity remains a key priority in ensuring power stability and preventing future supply challenges.

The project is expected to contribute significantly to Ghana’s long-term energy mix while supporting the country’s industrialisation agenda and broader economic transformation objectives.
