The communications team member of the New Patriotic Party, Grace Akosua Amoabeng, has questioned the basis for treating former NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, as a flight risk amid his ongoing legal proceedings.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on The Verdict on Starr FM on August 11, Grace Akosua Amoabeng argued that Wontumi had remained in Ghana while his businesses were halted he however remind in the country and continued to pursue his political ambitions.
She noted that Wontumi had been seeking to contest for the position of National Chairman of the NPP, questioning why he should now be considered a threat or flight risk.
According to her, Wontumi’s spokesperson had maintained that despite his conviction, he would continue to pursue his political ambitions because his legal team believe the is a tendency he would be granted bail when the matter goes before the Appeals Court.
Grace Akosua Amoabeng therefore questioned whether the country’s legal system could not put measures in place to ensure that Wontumi remains in Ghana while he pursues his legal options.
“Wontumi had not indicated that he was ill and needed to travel outside the country, unlike some previous cases where individuals facing legal proceedings had sought permission to travel for medical reason” she stated.
She maintained that the mere fact that Wontumi is facing legal proceedings should not, in itself, be sufficient grounds to presume that he poses a flight risk.
