Power must serve the people, not personal interests – Ato Forson reacts to landslide victory

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in Parliament, has described the 2024 elections as a powerful lesson for those in power.

His remarks follow a decisive victory for the NDC in both the presidential and parliamentary races, where the party delivered a significant margin of votes to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, secured 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55% of the total valid votes, defeating the NPP’s Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.

In addition to the presidential win, the NDC claimed a parliamentary majority, securing over 170 seats, including key constituencies traditionally held by the NPP. This landslide victory has bolstered Mahama’s position and granted him a strong mandate as he prepares to lead Ghana once again.

In a post on social media [X], Dr. Forson warned those in power not to take the people of Ghana for granted. “What transpired on Saturday, December 7th, was nothing short of a revolution—a people’s revolution,” Forson stated. “The people of Ghana have spoken decisively, rejecting poor governance, economic mismanagement, and maladministration.”

He added, “This election has taught us a crucial lesson: those in power must never take Ghanaians for granted. When entrusted with leadership, Ghanaians expect their government not just to govern, but to govern well. Power must serve the people, not personal interests.”

Dr. Forson also extended his congratulations to the 137 NDC Members of Parliament who have consistently stood with the people of Ghana. “The hard work and dedication of our NDC MPs have been rewarded by Ghanaians, who have given us an additional 50 seats in Parliament. This remarkable achievement raises our numbers from 137 to 187 seats.”

“We are profoundly grateful to the people of Ghana for this honour and the trust they have placed in us,” he continued. “This overwhelming endorsement will motivate us to work even harder and deliver more for Ghanaians.”

Concluding his statement, Forson reflected, “The lessons from this election are etched in history and will guide us moving forward. Together, we will continue striving for a better Ghana.”
