National Patrotic Party Communications team member, Kemi Musah, says Ghanaians have every right to demand answers from the governing party on its 2024 campaign promises to tackle illegal miningin the country.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on The Verdict, Kemi Musah said the governing party made the fight against galamsey a central campaign issue and made several commitments in its 2024 manifesto.
She cited promises to wage a “ruthless war” against illegal mining, ban new mining activities in forest reserves, impose stiffer punishment for mining in water bodies, roll out the Tree for Life initiative and restore degraded lands.
According to her, with the governing party having been given the mandate to govern, Ghanaians are justified in asking what has happened to those promises.
“I think that there is nothing wrong for me as a Ghanaian and many Ghanaians to ask the governing party, since they were given the mantle, what happened to those promises?”
Kemi Musah said the question is particularly relevant amid continued reports of illegal mining and its impact on the environment and water bodies.
She further questioned claims that the fight against galamsey is being won, arguing that developments on the ground do not appear to support such assertions.
“If we are seeing all these things play out and you tell us that you are winning the fight, I think you are just being unfair.”
“The government must be prepared to account for the commitments it made to Ghanaians, stressing that promises made while seeking power should not be forgotten once the mandate to govern has been secured”. she said
