Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has pushed back against arguments suggesting that electoral outcomes are the only measure of good leadership, pointing to Ghana’s revered traditional rulers as real-world examples of unelected but impactful leadership.
Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae, the MP addressed ongoing debates surrounding the Kpandai parliamentary rerun, stressing that while elections are essential in a democracy, they are not the sole pathway to quality leadership.
“It’s not always the case,” he said. “Look, you have chiefs who are doing their best for their communities. Are they elected?”
He added that Ghana’s system itself demonstrates that leadership is not limited to those who win votes.
“Elections don’t always produce the best, but that’s the choice we have. We have no other route in a democracy, but we all know leadership excellence doesn’t only come from elections.”
Mr. Baidoo noted that the excitement in Kpandai reflects a community eager to participate in choosing the person they feel best aligns with their needs — even if they ultimately re-elect the same candidate.
“The people of Kpandai are happy. They are about to be granted the opportunity to elect a person of their choice. It could even be my brother again, if they so wish,” he said.
