LGBTQ+ Bill: Proponents laud televised proceedings at Supreme Court but express concern over delay

Advocates for Christ, one of the proponents of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, of 2024 have welcomed the televised proceeding of the current cases challenging the passage of the bill.

Speaking on Starr Today with Joshua Nana Kwame Ayira on Thursday, a Member of the African Union Advisory Board against Corruption, Edem Senanu also expressed concerns that the process may drag the case.

“I think it is good that it was televised and all of us will see the merit of the issues that were raised. It will take the fact that the majority of Ghanaians have a position on this matter. People should be aware that over 90 percent of Ghanaians have a position on this.

“There is no fear about that process but I hope the process speeds up so we don’t have a legal vacation,” he added.

The Apex Court began hearing the two cases challenging the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Bill, 2024 which was streamed on national television.

The Panel of five Chaired by Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has directed lawyers representing Ace Journalist Richard Sky, the Plaintiff in one of the two cases challenging the passage of the LGBTQ+ Bill, to file a fresh motion by May 17.

The Supreme Court has also directed them to file fresh supporting affidavits and a statement of the case.

The Apex Court’s order came after lawyers of the Plaintiff, led by Paa Kwesi Abaidoo, filed two separate applications seeking permission to amend one of their reliefs and another to file a supplementary affidavit to their application for an interlocutory injunction.

However, Attorney General and Minister for Justice Godfred Yeboah Dame opposed the request for permission to file a supplementary affidavit, and lawyers representing the Speaker of Parliament, led by Thaddeus Sory urged that a fresh motion paper be filed to rectify the processes.

The Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame expressed satisfaction with the live telecast noting it eliminates misrepresentation and misinterpretation of the court’s process.
