President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Chief Fishermen and Queen Fishmongers will now be formally integrated into all fisheries co-management structures, giving them a greater voice in sector governance and decision-making.
Speaking at the National Chief Fisherman and Queen Fishmonger’s Conference, the President stressed that Ghana’s fisheries reforms cannot succeed without the leadership of traditional authorities who have long safeguarded discipline and stability in coastal communities.
“This conference underscores the compelling truth that no reform will succeed without your leadership,” President Mahama said.
“Historically, Chief Fishermen and Queen Fishmongers ensured discipline. They allocated landing spaces, enforced non-fishing days, mediated disputes, and maintained order at landing sites and in the markets.
“Though times have changed—with shifting markets and reduced institutional support due to politicized affairs—your authority and legitimacy remain strong, and I congratulate you on that. I pledge that this government will restore, respect, and formalize your roles.”
He announced key directives to strengthen their leadership, beginning with their full integration into all fisheries co-management structures.
President Mahama reaffirmed that the new framework is part of a broader national strategy to build a sustainable, community-led, and scientifically guided fisheries sector.
He assured the traditional leaders that his administration is committed to restoring their roles as central pillars of discipline, conflict resolution, and local fisheries management.
