President John Dramani Mahama has directed an expansion of recruitment into Ghana’s security services following a high-level meeting with heads of the various agencies.
According to a statement from the Presidency dated March 16, 2026, the meeting involved the Heads of Security Agencies, the Minister for the Interior, and the Acting Minister for Defence to review the ongoing recruitment process.
After receiving a briefing on the process, President Mahama directed that the number of personnel to be recruited into the security agencies be increased from 20,000 to 40,000 over a four-year period.
The President also instructed the heads of the security services to ensure that the recruitment process is conducted with transparency and fairness.
Officials present at the meeting included the Chief of Staff, the Secretary to the President, the Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs, and the National Security Coordinator.
Also in attendance were the heads of key security institutions, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the Narcotics Control Commission.
