President John Dramani Mahama has strongly condemned the recent assault on a journalist and a civilian during a demolition exercise at Spintex and has called for an emergency meeting with the heads of Ghana’s security agencies and the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA).
JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony and an eyewitness, were assaulted by soldiers during the demolition of a warehouse reportedly linked to businessman Daniel McKorley, also known as McDan.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of four deputy ministers at the Jubilee House, the President described the actions of the soldiers involved as unacceptable and contrary to the values of democratic governance.
“As a card-bearing member of the Ghana Journalists Association, I will not preside over a government that abuses or intimidates journalists in the lawful exercise of their duty. A free and responsible press is indispensable to our democracy and we must all work to protect the media,” he said, reaffirming his commitment to media freedom and the safety of journalists.
President Mahama, a card-bearing member of the GJA himself, emphasized the importance of a free and responsible press in strengthening Ghana’s democracy.
He announced plans to hold a meeting between security heads and the GJA to design an orientation programme that will help security officers view the media as development partners rather than adversaries.
“I will soon convene a meeting between the heads of the security services and the leadership of the GJA to plan a program to orient our troops to recognize the media not as enemies but as partners in development.”
President Mahama has ordered a swift and thorough investigation, directing the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to ensure those responsible face immediate disciplinary action.
