President John Dramani Mahama will on Friday, October 3, 2025, hold a high-level dialogue with more than 50 civil society organisations (CSOs) at the Jubilee House in Accra to deliberate on the growing menace of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
The meeting comes as pressure mounts on government to intensify the galamsey fight, with some advocacy groups calling for a state of emergency in mining communities devastated by pollution and land degradation.
The invitation, signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, stressed that the meeting is designed to foster “frank and constructive dialogue” between government and civil society, with the goal of harnessing collective expertise to confront the national crisis.
Among the invited organisations are the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, IMANI Ghana, the Ghana Bar Association, the Ghana Journalists Association, and Eco-Conscious Citizens.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced that all water bodies and forest reserves have now been classified as security zones in a bid to halt the destruction caused by illegal miners.
