The Ministry of Education has established a three-member committee to investigate concerns raised by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (University Teachers Association of Ghana) following its recent press engagement.
According to a statement from the Ministry, the committee has been tasked to examine the issues and submit recommendations to President John Dramani Mahama.
“The Ministry of Education has taken note of the concerns raised by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at their recent press conference,” the statement said.
The committee will be chaired by Deputy Minister for Education Dr. Clement Apaak, with members including Prof. K.T. Oduro, Technical Advisor to the Ministry, and Prof. Mahama Duweijua, Board Chairman of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (Ghana Tertiary Education Commission).
The Ministry explained that the committee is expected to probe UTAG’s allegations and related matters thoroughly and provide recommendations to the President.
UTAG has accused GTEC of regulatory overreach, alleging that it has been issuing unilateral directives that undermine university autonomy and academic freedom in public tertiary institutions.
The association also said it had earlier petitioned the Presidency on February 17, 2026, and issued a 14-day ultimatum to government, warning of possible industrial action if its concerns were not addressed.
In its response, the Ministry urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the committee, stressing its commitment to dialogue and resolving outstanding issues in the education sector.
“We remain committed to constructive dialogue and to resolving all outstanding issues in the best interest of tertiary education in Ghana,” the statement added.
