Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and Deputy Minority Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib says
the Minority caucus meeting was a routine strategy meeting convened to prepare members for the resumption of parliamentary business and was not triggered by any crisis within the caucus, has clarified.
Speaking to Austin Woode on Starr FM, Jerry Ahmed Shaib said the meeting was convened as part of the caucus’ normal preparations ahead of the resumption of Parliament.
He explained that such meetings are held routinely to prepare the caucus for parliamentary business and to strategise on issues expected to come before the House.
“It’s a routine strategy meeting. The purpose is to always prepare the caucus for the resumption of Parliament. As parliamentary caucus, we ordinarily do this every at meeting.”
Jerry Ahmed Shaib dismissed suggestions that the meeting was prompted by a revolt involving Members of Parliament within the Minority or disagreements with the Minority Leader.
“There is no instance of a revolt here, an MP within the minorities going after the minority leader, and this meeting is what we do as the Minority. It’s a routine pre-season strategy meeting to prepare for the resumption of Parliament,” he said.
According to him, the meeting is expected to focus on the agenda for Parliament’s resumption, the issues to be considered and how the caucus can strategically deal with them.
“When we are to resume Parliament, we discuss the agenda: why have we been recalled, what are the issues that are to be considered, how do we strategically deal with those issues. And that is the purpose for the meeting,” he stated.
He also urged the media to exercise caution when reporting claims concerning the meeting, stressing the importance of verifying information before publication.
“I think the basic rule in media professionalism is to verify,” he said.
Jerry Ahmed Shaib further explained that the caucus meeting was intended to enable members to regroup, strategise and properly plan how to execute their agenda when Parliament resumes.
“People may have views, and they may bring views up, but the agenda for the meeting, as I have told you, is to regroup, strategise, and plan properly to execute the plans for this meeting.” he stated
