Minority failed to utilize hung Parliament in checking public purse – Nana Akomea

The Vice Chairman of the Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Campaign, Nana Akomea says the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs) have failed to utilize the hung Parliament in checking the public purse.

Speaking on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, the former lawmaker explained that Ghanaians were looking forward to such a hung Parliament in order to strengthen Parliament but the NDC MPs failed.

According to him, the NDC has equal numbers including the Speaker but they have not been that robust to the expectation of Ghanaians.

“Since 1993 the party that holds the Presidency has also held the Parliament, but from 2020 the two parties were equal in Parliament and the opposition which is the NDC also had the Speaker. So I have been looking forward to a much more exciting Parliament.

“Compare to the 1997 Parliament, no, the excitement has lost. You can’t mention 20 Members of Parliament now but those days you could name a lot. The people there are bright but like I said the party that held the Presidency had also held the Parliament. For the first time you have the party that is holding the Presidency but is not holding the Parliament because the opposition has the Speaker. The numbers are equal,” Nana Akomea stated.

“So I thought there will be a bit more robust system in terms of overseeing the public purse. It hasn’t happened. I am doubly disappointed. Because we had always said Parliament was weak. Not because the people in Parliament were weak men and women. It is because if your party had the Speaker it adds to the extent you can play your oversight role with the same party. So everybody says Parliament is weak, let’s have another party to control Parliament. Then it happened in the 2020 election with 137 and 137 and the NPP had one extra independent but the NDC had the Speaker.”
