Minority slams Roads Minister over “deceptive” claims on road projects

The Minority accuses Roads Minister Agbodza of misleading Ghanaians about the previous administration’s road infrastructure achievements.

The Minority in Parliament has accused the Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, of deliberately misrepresenting the actual kilometres of roads constructed under the Akufo-Addo administration.

This follows the Minister’s assertion during the Government Accountability Series briefing on Wednesday, July 30, that the previous government’s claim of constructing over 10,000 kilometres of roads was misleading.

In a swift rebuttal, the Minority caucus stated that between 2017 and 2024, the Akufo-Addo government completed over 13,000 kilometres of roadworks; spanning new constructions, asphalt overlays, gravelling, and rehabilitation.

Speaking to journalists on the same day, former Roads Minister and member of the Roads and Transport Committee, Francis Asenso-Boakye, criticised Mr Agbodza for what he described as “cheap political propaganda” aimed at discrediting the former administration’s achievements.

“A recent claim by the Minister disputing President Akufo-Addo’s widely acknowledged achievement of constructing over 10,000 kilometres of roads is both misleading and disappointing,” Asenso-Boakye said. “The Minister alleged that he did not witness any such roads during his recent tour, describing the achievement as a ‘mirage.’”

He added, “This assertion is not only disingenuous but represents a gross attempt to politicise verifiable facts. Let us set the record straight. Between 2017 and the end of 2024, the Akufo-Addo administration undertook road projects totalling 13,624 kilometres. This figure includes new road constructions, asphalt overlays, gravelling, reconstruction and partial reconstruction, as well as upgrading and rehabilitation works.”

He contrasted this with the Mills-Mahama administration, which, according to him, delivered 4,636 kilometres of road projects over an eight-year period.

“The numbers speak for themselves. Any effort to downplay this achievement is a disservice to the public and an affront to the progress made in Ghana’s road infrastructure,” he said.

The Minority further questioned the Minister’s integrity, referencing what they described as a U-turn on his previous stance regarding sole-sourcing procurement processes.
