The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has attributed the recent call by the Finance Minister for GHC500m from the Contingency Fund to the wastage and mismanagement supervised by the ruling party’s administration.
He noted that the country’s troubled financial coffers have rendered the country unprepared to mitigate the looming food crisis.
“After prioritizing corruption, waste, and empty sloganeering over prudent management of the economy and the agriculture sector, this is how low the failed NPP government has sunk our dear country. Our dear nation has been rendered bankrupt such that today, the government cannot even afford GHS500 million to address the imminent food crises the nation is faced with,” Sammy Gyamfi stated.
He highlighted what he described as the government’s “questionable spending” which included putting some $58 million into the national cathedral project.
His comments come against the backdrop of a request by Minister of Finance, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam for urgent funding to the tune of GHC500m in order to help government tackle to looming food security crisis.
However, Mr. Gyamfi believes the government’s spending on private jet rentals and its costly expenditure has resulted in the situation where it has to make such a request.
“Against wise counsel, they wasted millions of taxpayer’s money on the rental of luxury private jets so the President could bath in the skies. They squandered millions of taxpayer’s money on other useless expenditures at the Presidency like there was no tomorrow,” he hit out at his political opponents.
The NDC Spokesperson questioned the government’s substantial investment in its flagship ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ and wondered why the program could not be tapped into at this crucial moment.
“This is how low we have sunk after the NPP government spent a colossal GHS3 billion on their much-touted ‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ program,” he said.
