The Concerned members of the Disability Desk of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have called on H.E. John Dramani Mahama to fulfill his 2024 campaign promise to include persons with disabilities (PWDs) in key government positions.
In a statement dated Wednesday, 22nd January 2025, the group emphasized the importance of translating campaign pledges into concrete actions that foster inclusivity and equal opportunities for all citizens, particularly PWDs, in the next administration.
During his 2024 election campaign, H.E. Mahama made several significant pledges aimed at empowering PWDs, underscoring their crucial role in national development. These commitments included:
- Free Tertiary Education for PWDs: Ensuring financial accessibility to higher education, removing barriers for PWDs who wish to further their studies.
- Review of the Disability Act: Promising to amend the Disability Act to better address the evolving needs and rights of PWDs.
- Employment Quota for PWDs: Introducing a minimum of 5% employment opportunities for PWDs in both public and private sectors, particularly in leadership positions.
- Representation in Governance: Pledging to appoint PWDs to key positions such as Ambassadors, MMDCEs, CEOs, Board Members, Presidential Staffers, and other critical roles in government.
In their statement, the concerned members of the Disability Desk commended Mahama’s previous commitments and reminded the president of the importance of following through on his promises.
The members pointed to the skills and achievements of PWDs in various professional, political, and entrepreneurial fields, noting that many qualified individuals with disabilities are more than capable of taking on leadership roles.
The Disability Desk also expressed its readiness to work closely with the incoming administration to identify and recommend capable PWDs for various positions, ensuring that all Ghanaians have an equal opportunity to contribute to the country’s growth and development.
“As H.E. Mahama has started forming his government, we the concerned members of the Disability Desk urge him to fulfill his promise to persons with disabilities”.
“The membership expresses its readiness to work with the incoming administration to identify and recommend capable PWDs for various roles. This collaborative effort will ensure that Ghana continues to progress toward becoming an inclusive society where everyone has an opportunity to contribute to national development”.
