Rashid Tanko-Computer, Deputy Director for IT and Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated that the party’s stance on the current leadership of the Electoral Commission (EC) remains unchanged despite the dismissal of petitions seeking their removal.
His comments come after petitions seeking the removal of EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and her deputies were dismissed by Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, who ruled that no prima facie case had been established.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Monday, February 23, Tanko-Computer stressed that although the Chief Justice found no prima facie case against the EC Chairperson and her deputies, the NDC still questions their competence.
“Our position has still not changed. Our position hasn’t changed,” he stated. “We felt that the current leadership, they are not fit for purpose. That is our position. We still hold that position.”
He clarified that the NDC as a party did not file any petition for the removal of the EC leadership.
“The party did not send any petition to the President. Neither any of our members sent a petition to the President. These are Ghanaians who decided they have issues with them.”
Tanko-Computer acknowledged that President John Dramani Mahama acted in accordance with the Constitution by referring the petitions to the Chief Justice and accepting the outcome.
“The President is a listener and a respecter of the law. He swore to uphold the Constitution… As the Chief Justice delivered his verdict, he has to go by it. He will not disturb it. That is the kind of President we have.”
However, he emphasized that the judicial outcome does not exonerate the EC in the eyes of the NDC.
“This doesn’t exonerate them in the eye of the NDC. No, that’s not all. We still have issues with them.”
