The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has directed the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) to nominate a new presidential candidate within ten days following the unfortunate death of its presidential candidate, Madam Akua Donkor.
Madam Donkor, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics known for her outspoken personality and dedication to the GFP, passed away suddenly, leaving a significant gap in the party’s leadership just weeks before the election.
In an official statement, the Deputy Chairman for Operations, Mr. Samuel Tettey, confirmed that while the 1992 Constitution and Public Elections Regulations, 2020, C.I. 127, lack specific guidance on the death of a presidential candidate before an election, Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution allows for a ten-day extension for new nominations in such circumstances.
The EC has suspended the printing of presidential ballot papers, which was nearing completion, until the GFP nominates a new candidate and informs the Commission. This decision underscores the EC’s commitment to ensuring a fair and orderly electoral process, even amid unexpected challenges.
The Ghana Freedom Party now faces an urgent task to nominate a successor to Madam Donkor and meet the ten-day deadline.
